Simon recently spoke to Tom Spilsbury (Editor and Chief of Doctor Who Magazine). Here is that EXCLUSIVE interview in full! He talks about Dubai, Girlfriends and Rugby...
Firstly, can you explain what your job is?
Well, I'm the editor of Doctor Who Magazine. So I decide what to put in the magazine, who we're going to interview, what sort of special features we might run, what's going to be on the cover, what letters to print, what's going to go in the comic strip, what the designs are going to look like... everything! Basically, I have 68 pages to fill every four weeks, and it's up to me to find things to put on them. And then... we have to turn it into a reality!
Can you tell us any ‘insider info’ about any upcoming issues of DWM this year?
Yes, I can. We will have the results of our Mighty 200 poll, which is going to make for a very special issue indeed. The winner of our set visit competition will be reporting from The Waters of Mars, and there will be also be a very special report from The Sarah Jane Adventures, when the Doctor drops in. On top of that, we'll also be interviewing an old Doctor or two, and running one or two rather different features. One of these will appear in Issue 411, and is all about whether Doctor Who can be proved to actually be any good or not. Gulp!
How long have you been a Doctor Who fan, and what was your first episode?
I've been a fan as long as I can remember. I was born in 1976, and I remember watching Destiny of the Daleks and City of Death in 1979, and buying the first issue of Doctor Who Weekly around the same time. I was three years old, and I was hooked!
How would you rate ‘Planet of the Dead’ out of 10?
I'm not sure I could give a mark, but I did enjoy it very much. But I love all of Doctor Who – I'd honestly give it all 10. So there!
What question do you wish you were asked in interviews?
Um, well you could ask me if I have a girlfriend at the moment...
Do you have a girlfriend at the moment?
No, I have just become single again. So if any ladies are out there and interested...? Just email me at the mag...!! ;-)
What was your trip to Dubai like?
It was brilliant, but a lot of hard work! Not glamorous at all, honestly, anyone who thought it was a holiday... well, they just need to see how hard that crew worked. I was just watching most of the time, and I was exhausted just looking from the sidelines! We were finally able to relax a bit on the last night – we all watched the rugby, and played card games with David Tennant and the crew.
What do you think of 11th Doctor to be – Matt Smith?
Well, I haven't yet met him, but I'm really looking forward to seeing him in action. I'm hopefully going to be able to go to the first readthrough soon, and I can't wait. He's a brilliant actor, and I'm sure he's going to be a terrific Doctor. Just like his ten predecessors!
Cheers, Tom!
Thanks for the interview – hope you all find it interesting. :)
